Yo-Yo Flower Tutorial

Hi Sassy Fans,

This is my first tutorial so please be gentle with me lol!  Today I'm going to show you how to make yo-yo flowers.  They may be called other names but I've always known them as yo-yo flowers.  I've seen these on cards and thought they looked to pretty, and sometimes I want something other than my usual purchased or punched flowers.  There are so many different fabric patterns out there so you'll be sure to find something you love and it only takes a small piece of fabric for each flower.

OK, the supplies you will need for yo-yo flowers are:  scissors or circle nestabilities, needle and thread, fabric, and buttons.

You can either cut your fabric circles with scissors or you can use your circle nestabilities to cut them.  If you use your nestabilities, you make your "sandwich" just like you would if you were cutting paper.  You can always layer two pieces of fabric together whether you're cutting with scissors or the nesties.  That saves you a little time as you're getting two yo-yo circles with only one cut.

Take your fabric circle with the right side of the pattern facing you, and use your needle and thread to make a running stitch around the edge of the fabric circle.

Pull on the threads to gather your fabric circle

After you've pulled your threads tight, tie them off in a knot.

Cut off the thread ends and attach your button.  You can either sew or glue the button.  Your finished yo-yo flower will be about half the size of the fabric circle that you started with.  So if you start with a 3 inch circle, your flower will measure about 1 1/2 inches.  If you precut some circles then this is a great project to work on while you watch TV.  You can stitch up quite a few of these in no time and then just add your matching button when you make your card.

And here's my card using one of my yo-yo flowers.  I used the beautiful Fabulous Darling on my card.  You can find her and all her Sassy friends over at Funky Kits.

  19. Thanks for this - very interesting as it adds such a different feel to the card, especially used with the lace & I love your soft colours on the card. Delightful effect with the satiny material & I can think of this embellishment with Tammy being particularly effective too. Thanks for ideas.
